Eric J. Byres, P. Eng, ISA Fellow

Chief Executive Officer

Eric Byres is widely recognized as one of the world’s leading experts in the field of industrial control system (ICS) and Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) cybersecurity. He is the inventor of the Tofino Security technology – the most widely deployed ICS-specific firewall in the world – licensed by industry giants Honeywell, Schneider Electric, and Caterpillar. Eric is also known for his leadership in international standards and research for industrial communications.

Eric holds an extensive list of accomplishments, which includes founding the BCIT Critical Infrastructure Security Centre, providing guidance to government security agencies and major energy companies on protection for critical infrastructures, sitting as the chair of the ISA SP-99 Security Technologies Working Group, representing Canada for the IEC TC65/WG10 standards effort, and testifying to the US Congress on the Security of Industrial Control Systems in National Critical Infrastructures. He has received numerous awards from international organizations and was made an ISA Fellow in 2009. In 2013 he received ISA’s highest honor: Excellence in Leadership.

Jonathan Butts, PhD

Chief Technology Officer

Dr. Jonathan Butts is a retired Air Force Officer and renowned expert on military and critical infrastructure cyber protection. As the Research Director at the U.S. Air Force Center for Cyberspace Research, he developed the Department of Defense's premier research and training program for industrial control system security. He has also held roles as the Commander of Theater Deployable Communications Flight and Chief of Offensive Tactics Development at the 23rd IOS Air Force Information Operations Center.

Jonathan has presented at prestigious security conferences around the world on various topics, including critical infrastructure protection, malware analysis, protocol verification, and operationalizing military actions in cyberspace. He has performed research and worked extensively with the Department of Defense, Department of Homeland Security, Department of Energy, National Security Agency, Central Intelligence Agency, and U.S. Secret Service. In addition to his roles at aDolus and QED Secure Solutions, Jonathan sits as the Committee Chair for the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) working group on Critical Infrastructure Protection.

Billy Rios

Billy Rios is a proven leader in the strategic planning and execution of cybersecurity programs. As the Director of Vulnerability Research and Threat Intelligence with Qualys, Billy led development in vulnerability research, threat intelligence, ICS/SCADA, and embedded security products and services. Prior to Qualys, Billy managed Google’s frontline response for externally reported security incidents. At Microsoft, Billy was the Security Program Manager for the Internet Explorer product line and guided the company's response to a number of high profile incidents, including Operation Aurora. Billy has also worked as a penetration tester and an intrusion detection analyst, and served as an active duty Marine Corps Officer.

Billy is one of the world’s top experts on emerging threats to industrial and medical devices and is credited for the discovery of thousands of security vulnerabilities in critical systems. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Information Systems, a Master of Science degree in Information Systems, an MBA, and a Masters of Military Operational Arts and Sciences.

Frank Williams

Frank Williams brings more than 30 years of experience building companies that focus on creating new information technologies for industry. He began his professional career as a founding partner of Action Instruments. He soon became CEO and developed the company to be a leader in industrial automation solutions, before a successful acquisition by Eurotherm in 1998. Frank then went on to hold executive positions at a number of successful automation industry start-ups and majors, including Vice President and Director at Tofino Security, Chief Executive Officer at ELPRO Technologies, and Chief Executive Officer at Statseeker. In addition to his role at aDolus, Frank currently serves as strategic advisor and Board member for Statseeker, a recognized leader in networking monitoring software.

Widely respected in the industrial automation market, Frank has given many speeches, written numerous articles, and is passionate about emerging technologies related to wireless, cybersecurity, and advancing productive networking solutions. He holds a BSEE from San Diego State University, augmented by many post-graduate courses in management, leadership, and technology.

John Livingston

John Livingston is the CEO of Verve Industrial Protection, a leading industrial cybersecurity software and services firm. John spent the first 21 years of his career with McKinsey & Co. where he was a Senior Partner. At McKinsey, John led a range of practices and initiatives. He was the leader of the America’s Wireless Telecom practice for 4 years and the Chicago Office for 5 years, and was one of the founding members in the firm’s software and advanced analytics practice. John joined Verve Industrial in 2016 when he partnered with the founder to accelerate the growth of the company’s cybersecurity business. Verve’s software protects all industrial controls equipment from a single, integrated console. The company’s services offerings range from assessment and system hardening to ongoing managed security services.

John graduated from Princeton University in 1989 with Honors and a degree in Economics. After Princeton, he graduated from Northwestern University Law School and the Northwestern Kellogg Graduate School of Management both in 1993.
